Teaching Experience
University of Maine at Fort Kent (1976-present) As the only botanist at a University offering bachelor degree programs in Biology, Environmental Studies, and Nursing, plus a two year degree program in Forestry, my responsibilities include the teaching of ten different courses (4 per semester) over a three year cycle.

Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa (1972-1976) Teaching assistant assignments in General Biology, General Botany, Dendrology, and Plant Taxonomy

Research
Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa (1972-1976)

At Iowa State, my research was in the area of plant tax onomy. For my MS thesis, an attempt was made to correlate the anatomical and morphological variation found within the Central American members of the group Plicatula of the grass genus Paspalum with the cytological inconsistencies reported from the literature.

The following publication describes some of my findings:

Selva, S. B. 1976. Some preliminary cytological observa tions on a new basic number in Paspalum convexum Humb.. And Bonpl. (Gramineae). Canadian Journal of Botany 54:385-394.

In my PhD dissertation, an attempt was made to establish biostratigraphic units, based on the distributions of 203 taxa of freshwater diatoms, that could be used in the cor relation of one area of the Ogallala with another. Seven new taxa were described from this assemblage:

Selva, S. B. 1981. Tertiary freshwater diatoms from the Ogallala of western Kansas. Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science 88:85-90.

University of Maine at Fort Kent (1976-present)

As a teaching institution, the University of Maine at Fort Kent encourages research but neither provides release time nor makes it a condition of employment. Since coming to Maine in 1976, I have established an active research program in lichenology and have been supported over the years by small grants from the University of Maine at Fort Kent's Faculty Development Fund, the Appalachian Mountain Club, The Maine Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, The New Brunswick Museum, the National Geographic Society, and the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station. Since 1983, when I spent a seven month sabbatical leave in Ottawa studying my Aroostook County, Maine lichens under Dr. Irwin Brodo, the focus of my research has been on the lichen Order Caliciales and the use of lichens in assessing the continuity of forest ecosystems.

The following publications document my contributions to the discipline:

Papers describing various aspects of this research have been presented before the following groups:
--The American Bryological and Lichenological Section at the AIBS annual meetings in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1997
--1993 Natural Areas Conference, University of Maine
--1993 Conference on The Value of Old-growth Forest Ecosystems in the Eastern United States, Asheville, North Carolina
--1994 Conference on the Status and Management of Old growth Forests in the Northeast, Williamstown, MA

Selected Honors, Fellowships, and Memberships
--1989 recipient of the Florence M. Christie Research Fellowship sponsored by the New Brunswick Museum, St. John, New Brunswick
--Outstanding Contribution to Faculty Excellence Award, presented by the University of Maine at Fort Kent faculty senate (May 1990)
--Current memberships in The American Bryological and Lichen ological Society, The British Lichen Society, The International Association for Lichenology, The Josselyn Botanical Society, and The Nature Conservancy.

Campus and Community Service
A diverse array of campus and University of Maine system committee assignments over the past 21 years have been complemented by the following campus activities:
--Coordinator of the Environmental Studies Program
--Supervisor of planning, development (in 1978), and subsequent management of a 16-acre outdoor classroom
--Curator of the vascular plant and lichen herbaria and the general botany, plant morphology, agrostology, plant taxonomy, and dendrology teaching collections
--Manager of the University of Maine at Fort Kent greenhouse
--Freshmen Advisor, 1990-present

In addition to the numerous slide talk and nature walk-type programs presented to such groups as the Northeast Chapter of The National Audubon Society, The Josselyn Botanical Society, The Maine Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, The Garden Club Federation of Maine, Elderhostel groups, and Aroostook County elementary schools and 4-H clubs over the past 20 years, community service activities have included:
