Internet Connections

On-Campus

If you bring your own computer on campus you will be allowed to use UMFK’s wireless internet access or the local area network (LAN) access. UMFK provides high speed wireless internet access all over campus, including in the dorms and in some outdoor locations.  If you wish to use the wireless internet access, you must have a wireless card in your computer and you must register the hardware address of the wireless card before getting on the internet for the first time.  UMFK also provides high speed LAN (wired) internet access in several locations on campus including the dorms. If you wish to use the LAN access, you must have an Ethernet card in your computer and you must register the hardware address of the card before getting on the internet for the first time.  Any computer that connects to the internet using UMFK’s internet access must have updated antivirus software installed.  You can download the latest version of Symantec antivirus free from UMFK. You will need to log in with the username and password from your on-campus computer account.  For help with connecting to the internet on-campus, please contact the UMFK IT Department.

The UMFK IT Department supports computers with the Windows 2000, ME, XP and Vista operating systems as well as the Mac OS 10.x operating system.  If you are planning on purchasing a new computer, the IT Department recommends the following:

  • Windows XP or Vista or Mac OS 10.x operating system
  • At least a 40gb hard drive
  • At least 1gb of RAM
  • A CD-RW/DVD-R drive
  • A wireless card
  • An Ethernet card

Off-Campus

If you are a UMFK student who is living off-campus you may connect to UMFK’s modem pool to access the internet.  UMFK has twenty-four 56K modems.  Click here for instructions on how to make a modem connection with a Windows operating system.  And click here for instructions to make a modem connection with a Macintosh operating System.  The username and password required to connect via the modems is the same as the UMS Student username and password used for email and MaineStreet.   You will receive 100 hours free each month of off-campus access.  If you reach 100 hours of modem use in a given month, you will be denied access until a new month begins.  For help with this connection contact the UMFK It Department.
