Honors Experience

In the past, Honors courses have been organized into a series united by an overarching theme. The theme for the academic year 2002-2003 was "Defining a Generation through War and Peace." This theme included seminars on "The Beatles," led by Dr. Scott Brickman, a nationally recognized musician and scholar, and "Reflections of Vietnam," given by Dr. Carol Hawkins. The theme for 2003-2005 is "Environment, Technology, and People". This thematic series was led off by a seminar on the philosophy of technology, "O Brave New World", conducted by Dr. Vladimir Suchan in Fall 2003. In Fall 2004, Dr. Kim Borges taught a seminar on "The Human Genome Project" which was highly acclaimed by its student participants. For Spring 2005, Tony Gauvin is offering the Honors seminar on "Peeking into our Cybernetic Future?" This course is designed, in Tony Gauvin's words, to help students "find a new confidence in their ideas and their ability to create their own destiny in our modern world." Among other Honors seminars taught in the recent past were courses on "Chaos"; "Utopia", "Food", "Terrorism", and "The Plague."
