Applying for a U.S. Social Security Number

All Non-Resident Aliens need to complete a personal interview with the Social Security Office to acquire a Social Security Number.

Students will need to provide the Social Security Administration with the following:

  • Social Security Application (attached)
  • Form I-94 (attached to I-20 or passport)
  • Form I-20
  • Valid Identification (ID with a picture)
  • Letter of Intent to Hire from Employer
  • Certified Transcript (needs Registrars official seal) Official Birth Certificate (original document only)
  • Canadian Social Insurance Card (if applicable)

Before leaving the Social Security Office, please ask them to provide you with written proof, verifying you have applied for your U.S. Social Security Number (SSN). Return this document to the Student Employment Office upon your return to campus. This will allow you to work until you receive your SSN. However, you will not be paid until the SSN is received by the Student Employment Office.

Once you receive your Social Security card, please bring it to the Student Employment Office immediately.
