Application Procedures
Non U.S. citizens are not eligible for U.S. Federal financial aid. A discounted tuition rate is automatically available. Tuition savings can be substantial. Other UMFK financial assistance is limited to on-campus employment. To be considered for employment, a University work-study application is required.

Students are encouraged to seek assistance through their Canadian Bursary. For Canadian Financial Assistance try the following links:

Alumni Association Scholarship (UMFK)

Description: UMFK's Alumni Association usually awards this scholarship annually. Student who will be a Junior or Senior in the award year may apply. This scholarship requires an applicant to complete the essay portion of the scholarship application.

BigSun Scholarship

Description: Organization wants to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. They are offering an annual scholarship.

All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in. Current amount of the award is $500.
The successful applicant will be a high school senior OR be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution. (Application details are available on BigSun's website.)

Gyles, John Education Awards

Description: The John Gyles Education Awards are available each year to students in both Canada and the United States.
  • Applicant must have full Canadian or American Citizenship;
  • Awards are available to both male and female for all areas of post secondary study.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.7 is required.

Criteria other than strictly academic ability and financial need are considered in the selection process. Applications are available online. Selected students will receive up to $3,000. Updated 1/31/06.

Teachers Plus (for Nova Scotia Residents)

Description: Each year the Teachers Plus Credit Union provides $15,000 in funding to deserving students.

Four awards are available, each worth $1,000 for students who have been enrolled in a teacher training instituion for at least one semester and are a permanent resident of Nova Scotia. The student may be attending a University outside of Nova Scotia as long as their permanent address is within Nova Scotia.

If you are considered a dual citizen, having both a U.S. Citizen status and a Canadian Citizen status, you may elect to apply for U.S. Federal financial assistance (by completing a FAFSA) or you may elect to apply for Canadian assistance. You can, however, receive aid from only one source, (i.e., either Canadian or American).

Dollar amounts provided to Canadian students are in U.S. funds, unless otherwise indicated.

Alternative Loans
Alternative Loans (in U.S. funds) through U.S. lenders may provide financial assistance to students and/or parents who are unable to borrow through traditional student loan programs or are unable to borrow sufficient money to cover college costs. The submission of the FAFSA is not usually required to be considered for this type of assistance.

International - Alternative Student Loan Program from Wachovia

Fleet Bank provides undergraduate loans in US funds to canadian students, simply go to fleet.com click on the Quick Links dropdown box on the right, click on Edu. & Personal Loans and click GO. From there you must then click on Education Loans in the middle column. This brings you to a list of Education Loans; click on International & Study Abroad Loan Options and then scroll down to Canadian Higher Education Loan Program (CanHELP) and click on the appropriate links.

University Workstudy
A limited amount of University money may be available to assist students who may not qualify for assistance through the Federal Work-Study Program. Students are limited to part-time employment during the school term but may work 40 hours per week (for an average of 7.5 weeks) if employed under the summer University Work-Study Program. Eligibility is not based on need. The FAFSA is not required to be considered for this type of assistance. Work-study earnings are paid by check every two weeks.
