How does Distance Education Work?
At UMFK Distance Education is available through three methods; interactive television (ITV), the Internet and Video Conferencing. The faculty is primarily based out of the UMFK campus and instruction is provided through live broadcasts, archived video (VHS or online), live video links, web pages and the mail. Courses must be completed within a specific semester, even though you may never be on campus. All courses are fully accredited and may be applied to specific degrees or transferred to another institution.

What programs are offered?
Currently two degree programs are offered which may be completed entirely online or through a combination of online and ITV. The Bachelor of University Studies is a four year degree that each student can tailor to their own interests. The RN to BSN program is designed for nursing professionals, and can be completed within two years if prerequisites in general education and support courses have been completed. A third option is a set of coursers leading to the Teacher-Disabled Students (K-8) endorsement. All courses are delivered via distance education technology in collaboration with the Presque Isle and Machias campuses.

Is Distance Education right for me?
A good question. There is something to be said for being on a college campus, and many are looking for that traditional experience. For some the ability to have contact with faculty and staff outside of class and the opportunity to discuss things face to face with a faculty member is important. For others, the convenience of taking a course without having to travel or taking an online course on their schedule is important. You may want to take this quick survey to better gauge how you may do in an online class.

When can I access my online course website?
In most cases you will not be allowed access to the course website prior to the start of the semester. Some faculty may post preliminary information a week or so before the semester begins, so you may want to start trying to access information at that time. If you are unsure, you may contact the faculty directly by email, which is posted in each course description when a course search is done.

How do I take exams online?
ITV courses take place only at University outreach centers or on campus, so tests are administered by the staff.

Most internet classes will utilize online quizzes and/or written assignments that are submitted electronically. Be sure that you have a secure and reliable internet connection. Online tests are timed and you do not want to be cutoff prematurely. You may want to consider using a campus computer lab for online test taking.

Your course may require that you have a proctor to supervise tests. For information on choosing a proctor, click here.

How do I add or drop a course?
Normal guidelines apply to any distance education class. If you are in an online class and have not logged into the course website within the first week, the faculty may consider you as "dropped", although you will have to follow the procedures in the above link. You must also follow the policies stated in course syllabus regarding participation, due dates, etc. Any changes to your overall course load due to adding or dropping classes, may have an impact on your financial aid eligibility.

How do I use the UMFK Library?
All those who are enrolled in course at UMFK are entitled to receive a library card. You will be sent this in the mail. This card will allow you access to certain resources on the library website, such as indexes and databases for journal articles and abstracts. There are many other services and resources on the library website

Will I be able to take courses related to my Job?

How do I get textbooks?

How do I contact my Instructor?
In most cases your instructor will provide contact information on the course syllabus and/or course web page. Our full-time faculty may also be found on the campus directory.

Are my credits transferable to another university?
You must check with the other university's registrar to verify if this is the case. Our online and ITV courses are regular fully accredited classes, and in general are transferable to other institutions.
