Women's Basketball Season Recap

2005-06 Season Recap

The 2005-06 Lady Bengal's basketball season was one of the most successful seasons in school history. The team set a school record with 19 wins, including an amazing 15 straight to end the season, and took home their second Sunrise Conference championship in the last three years. The team finished the conference with a perfect 8-0 regular season record before capping the season off with tournament wins against U-Maine Machias and Lyndon State College in claiming the title and a trip to the NAIA Division II Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. The season also included first time wins over traditional Maine powers Husson College and St. Joseph's College.

Securing the backcourt for the Lady Bengals were a trio of talented junior guards, PG Dana Lemon (Richmond, VA), SG Nicole Corbin (Van Buren, ME), and SG/SF April Allen (Milo, ME). Corbin led the team in scoring at 17.5ppg and was the key long range shooter, shooting over 38% from three point range. Lemon led the team in assists and steals, while controlling the game at both ends of the floor. Allen did a little bit of everything, as she was the best one-on-one defender while being an extremely versatile scoring threat on the offensive end.

Locking down the paint for this squad was junior power forward Traci Weatherhead (Limestone, ME) and freshman center Arcilla Jeffers (St. Kitts). Both averaged just below nine rebounds per game while combining for over 20ppg. Also contributing in the post was a pair of freshman, Amanda Davis (Wiscasset, ME) who was leading the conference in scoring before missing the second semester, as well as Geniece Bassue (St. Kitts), who played some big minutes down the stretch, and at 6'1" has a lot of potential to do very well. Rounding out the roster were forwards Heather Hartman (So. Fort Kent, ME) and Polly Pelletier (Sr. Belgrade, ME) and guards Nicole Jandreau (Fort Kent, ME) and Maria Williams (Bath, ME). The Lady Bengals graduate only one senior in Pelletier and will look to break more records and reach new heights in 2006-07.

2004-05 Season Recap

The Lady Bengals found out last winter that repeating as conference champions is not an easy task. Injuries decimated the lineup at times, but UMFK was able to remain very competitive both in and out of the conference. An early season win over St. Joseph's (CT) in West Hartford showed the resiliency of the squad and helped set the tone for the season.

After securing the #3 seed for the conference tournament, the Lady Bengals had to take on rival Lyndon State on their home floor in the semi-finals. UMFK came-up short, and Lyndon went on to win the conference title and move-on to the nationals.

Senior guard Melissa Hare was named to the All-Conference team for the Sunrise Conference, and senior forward Heidi Fisher became the school's all-time leading scorer, eclipsing the 1,000 point mark late in the season. Seniors Allison Lutz, Jessica Gagnon, and Sara Quint all provided solid play throughout the winter for the Lady Bengals as well. All 5 seniors will be greatly missed, and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors!
