Women's Basketball season ends at National tourney

2008 NAIA Division II National Tournament

Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena

Sioux City, Iowa March 12

3.12.08

Kansas City, MO – The UMFK women's basketball team season came to a tough close Wednesday at the NAIA II Women's Basketball National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa vs. #1 College of the Ozarks 110-37 in game number four in first round action at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.

The Lady Bengals needed to play next to flawless to defeat the #1 seeded Lady Ozarks who were making a record 14th trip to the national stage while the UMFK women were making their third trip in five years.  However, UMFK (17-11) only managed four first half field goals and five free throws while COFO was absolutely on fire as they knocked down 21 of 42 shoots including 9-15 from three point range on their way to an insurmountable 53-16 halftime lead.  In fact, the Lady Ozarks would go onto to tie a single game record for threes (17) and were two points shy of tying the single game record for points (112).  They played like the team with the most experience while the Lady Bengals struggled on both ends but especially offensively where they committed 22 turnovers leading to 33 COFO points.

The Lady Bengals simply could not get going and were further put in a hole when they lost staring point guard Amber Garrison (Oroville, CA) to an ankle injury during Tuesday’s shot around session.  Arcilla Jeffers led UMFK with 16 points making 5-13 shoots but the rest of the team went a frigid 6-55 as the Lady Bengals shot a season low 18% from the floor.  All twelve COFO players scored and six reached double figures led by Janessa DeMuth with 16 as they cruised into the second round with a 32-1 record.  UMFK will have to wait another year to try to return to the national tournament and will be able to build upon yet another successful season which ended where so many teams dream of reaching.

Lady Bengals to face Ozarks

3.6.08

Kansas City, MO – The UMFK Lady Bengals were rewarded for their third trip to the NAIA II Women’s Basketball Tournament in the last five years with a first round game vs. #1 overall seed College of the Ozarks Wednesday as the bracket for this years NAIA Women’s Division II tourney was released by the association.

The Midlands Conference Champion College of the Ozarks (MO) was the number one seed in the last regular season polls and are currently 31-1 after winning the MCCC championship.  Of the 32 teams in this years’ field, the Ozarks have the most appearances with 13 and an overall National Tourney record of 16-13.  However, they have never one a national championship.  Little consolation for UMFK as the Lady Bengals (17-10), the Sunrise Conference Champions, have been two times in school history (2005 & 2006) dropping both first round games to #1 overall Cedarville (Ohio), who didn’t reach the tourney this year.
