Dennis, MA – Fort Kent, Maine still has banks of snow scattered throughout the area but five University of Maine Fort Kent men’s golf team members were able to compete in a fall season and then for much of the winter prior to heading to the Region X Golf Championships at Dennis Pines Golf Course in Dennis, MA April 15 & 16 against powerhouse SUNY Delhi.  Delhi, who not only has a golf management degree program but actually has a golf course on campus, took the event title and had the top five low individual scorers including Region X Medalist Clint Chaffe (two day total 10 over 154 on the par 72 course).  UMFK repeated as Sunrise Conference Champs as they were the lone representative in the SC at the event.  They practiced in the fall at beautiful Fort Kent Golf Club and then were able to work on their swing and putting indoors in a UMFK Sports Center racquet ball court.  Select members used Spring Break to get some rounds in and then headed to Cape Cod for the championships.  Next year, the conference is looking to get six teams committed and compete in their own conference championships.  For now, UMFK is proud to represent the Sunrise and the five team members achieved quite a feat, considering the St John Valley got hit with close to if not more than 200 inches of snow this winter.  Patrick Deane (Middleboro, MA) put in a great couple of rounds to finish as the top UMFK golfer and received All Region X honors with a 199 and low round of 94.  Andrew Martin (Van Buren, ME) was second on the team with a very respectable 203 while Issac Ward (Ashland, ME 214), Jay Myers (Houlton, ME 225) and Mike Sinclair (Kittery, ME 234) closed out the UMFK team scoring.  The Bengals only expect to improve and get better for Coach Joe Zubrick who was pleased with the effort and looks forward to building the program with the unique location and environment for golf.
