Fort Kent, ME – The University of Maine at Fort Kent and the surrounding community experienced a major flood last week. The St John Valley was hit with over 200 inches of snow this past winter followed by some heavy rains the last week of April into early May. The melting snow in combination with over 24hours of rain resulted in swollen rivers overflowing into major bridges, roads and neighborhoods forcing the evacuation of downtown Fort Kent and the resident student body at UMFK.

Hickey & Jacoby Named Athlete of the Year

Fort Kent, ME - Floyd "Red" Powell, Lowell "Ozzie" Osgood, Wulf Koch and Larry Murphy were inducted into the revived 2008 UMFK Athletic Hall of Fame during a banquet held on campus Saturday. Friday evening, Heather Hickey was named Female Athlete of the Year while Emyln Jacoby was named top male for their respective contributions for the 2007-08 season (see featured story below).

Dennis, MA – Fort Kent, Maine still has banks of snow scattered throughout the area but five University of Maine Fort Kent men’s golf team members were able to compete in a fall season and then for much of the winter prior to heading to the Region X Golf Championships at Dennis Pines Golf Course in Dennis, MA April 15 & 16 against powerhouse SUNY Delhi. full story

Hickey & Jacoby named UMFK Athletes of the Year

Fort Kent, ME - Heather Hickey (Fort Kent) was named University of Maine at Fort Kent Female Athlete of the Year while Emlyn Jacoby (Johannesburg, So. Africa) was named top male for their respective contributions during the 2007-08 athletics season at the schools annual awards banquet. The Terry Drown award for scholastic achievement was given to Megan Watson (Hermon, Maine – Women’s Soccer) and Gediminas Sumyla (Vilnius, Lithuania – Men’s Basketball) as both student-athletes not only helped their respective teams but held the highest GPA in the classroom. Bangor Daily News sports writer Larry Mahoney was a quest speaker and was extremely impressed with the success achieved by the UMFK athletic program as a whole. This past season produced a Student-Athlete Maine System Board of Trustee Member in Heather Hickey, twelve NAIA Scholar-Athletes, fifteen Sunrise Conference Scholar-Athletes, three Sunrise Conference Top Scholars, three Sunrise Conference Titles, four Team Runner-up awards and eleven NAIA All-American Honorable Mentions. full story ...

Icemen pile up more goals in win

The UMFK Hockey Icemen defeated Clair 10-8 in Club Hockey Tuesday evening. Coach Leo Trudel's squad will be back in action Thursday night vs. St. Francois at Nadeau Arena (FEB 14) 8:00pm US TIME.

UMFK basketball teams visit Niagara Falls
Friday January 11
The UMFK men’s and women’s basketball teams hit the road for Niagara Falls, New York for two games each vs. NAIA II American Mideast schools Daemen College and Houghton College over winter break. UMFK dropped all four games but got a taste for NAIA II play outside of the Sunrise and also were able to spend a afternoon at Niagara Falls. The women lost to Daemen 97-51 and to Houghton 64-45 while the men got two lessons losing to Daemen 94-58 and Houghton 90-60. Complete game recaps can be found at the respective team sites. WBB / MBB
