What's cool about UMFK?
Since UMFK is located in such a closely knit community, I find that many people become recognizable and it is the aspect of safety that is most comforting. Since leaving a large public school system in a city, my classes are more enjoyable because of the smaller sizes. It is nice not to be known as a number or a statistic and it is a truly welcoming and enjoyable environment to live in!

What do you do for fun outside the classroom?
There are lots of activities for students outside of the classroom. Besides playing sports for the college, there are also intramural teams of floor hockey, volleyball, soccer, etc. Almost every week the community mentors host events which are free to the students as well as seasonal events and concerts around campus. Lonesome Pines Trails is within walking distance of the residence halls and is easy to get to, as are most places in town.

What do you like about the Elementary Education program?
What I like most about the Education program are all of the opportunities that are available. Fort Kent is unique in that the community elementary school, the middle/high school, and university are all located on the same street, consecutive to each other. Also, the Chippy Learning Center, which is a day care/pre-school program located adjacent to the high school, has a program that is being adopted in other parts of the country because of its strong focus in early childhood development. I am able to visit and observe classrooms frequently to gain hands-on experience.

What are your professors like?
My professors are very down to earth and helpful people. Because of the small class sizes, we as students can use it to our advantage to get the help we need and the attention that would not be available at a larger university. Here at UMFK, students are not considered numbers. Many of my Education professors have history not only in a university classroom but also in elementary and secondary classrooms.

Any advice for a new student coming to UMFK?
My advice to any new student would be to get involved with anything that the university has to offer. There are several clubs to join, sports teams to be a part of, and community events to become involved with. From my personal experience of being on the womens soccer team, It is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and continue to participate in the sport I love. Through involvement, I have made friends that turned into family. :)
