The Certificate of Study in Criminal Justice is offered by the University's Office of Academic Outreach. The CSCJ offers you college level preparation and coursework in the criminal justice and law enforcement fields. It serve as an excellent credential for entry level positions and is appropriate preparation for entry into the UMFK two-year Criminal Justice and four-year Rural Public Safety Administration programs. Our courses are taught by experienced faculty as well as practicing law enforcement and public safety/management professionals. All courses are also fully approved by the University of Maine at Fort Kent, an accredited institution of higher education.
Possession of the CSCJ does not mean automatic acceptance into a specific UMFK degree program or to the University in general. To apply to the University as a degree student, click here.
Who should participate?
- Full and part time officers, radio dispatchers, public safety staff and others in the law enforcement field who are looking to add college courses to their portfolio, or otherwise acquire additional training.
- Those interested in exploring the fields of criminal justices and public safety, who have had no formal training or exposure.
Employment
Many employers are now looking for applicants that have some college coursework, although not necessarily a degree. The CSCJ allows you to receive college credits packaged as a valuable certificate program.
Format
All of the courses required for completion of the CSCJ program will be offered online. Most courses will also be offered as traditional courses at the Fort Kent campus. These are fully transferable into the certificate program. Our schedule is designed so that you can complete the program in as little as three semesters. Those preferring to take a lighter course load may take up to four years to complete the program. Refer to the CSCJ course schedule below for upcoming classes.

Other credits
The University tries to maximize credits from the student's previous college work or from work/life experiences and apply these towards the student's program requirements. These can include transfer credits from other institutions, challenge examinations, military credits, experiential learning.
Tuition/Costs
Participants will be charged in-state tuition rates, regardless of residency. This will be advantageous to those in neighboring states. This in-state "waiver" is only applicable for students who are not matriculated or otherwise enrolled or accepted into any degree program at any UMS campus. Once a student participating in the CRJ certificate decides to enroll full time in a degree program (e.g.. PSA), they will be charged appropriate tuition rates from that point forward.
For current tuition rates, click here.
There will be an additional $50 fee for the processing and issuing of the official certificate.
