Students have plentiful opportunities for extra-curricular activities. The North Maine Woods offers millions of acres of forestland as an outdoor playground. Our location close to the Allagash Wilderness Waterway provides plenty of opportunity for canoeing, camping and fishing. Baxter State Park, home to Maine's tallest mountain is a mecca for backcountry hiking, backpacking, and canoeing. Through the Academic Outreach program students can use camping equipment and canoes free of charge.
In the winter, a large network of snowmobile trails originates from the Fort Kent area. A small alpine ski area is located within walking distance of UMFK and the Maine Winter Sports Center has a world class cross country and biathlon training center within just a few minutes drive of campus. UMFK has a Timber Sports Team that allows interested students to train and compete against other forestry schools in various competitions using logging equipment and techniques of the past and present. Student clubs, intramurals, and intercollegiate sports, which compete in the NAIA, are also available.
