The Winter Sports Management concentration is designed to prepare the student to enter positions of responsibility within the community-based ski industry. Maine currently has many small community-based ski areas throughout the state including two within Fort Kent and three others in Aroostook County. Although several college programs exist throughout the country in ski area management, these are all geared toward ski resort management. This is the only program that focuses on smaller community-based ski areas that have their own set of unique management goals and objectives. The focus of this program will be on how to develop a business model that is sustainable through such means as fundraising, event hosting, and grant writing. The program will also focus on such aspects as coordinating volunteer activities, community based programming, and basic development and maintenance of ski area infrastructures.
